What Moneypenny charges, and when to build instead
Moneypenny alternatives
What Moneypenny actually sells
Two different things, and most comparisons blur them. Its Telephone Answering Service puts a human receptionist on your calls: a "Moneypenny PA" who answers in your company name, transfers the call or takes a message. Its AI Receptionist is the software product, described on its own page as "fully automated answering", and the two can be blended so the AI takes routine calls and the people take the rest.
The company says it was founded in 2000, that it has handled "200m real calls", and that its AI is built on those calls rather than on generic data. Its receptionists are UK-based and work in teams of five, so someone who knows your business is free when your own PA is on another call. Every fact in that paragraph is its own wording on the two pages linked above, read on 28 October 2026.
So the honest shape of the choice is not "Moneypenny or AI". It is: do you want a phone answered by a big answering company, a self-serve AI product, or an AI receptionist built around your own business?
What Moneypenny costs
The AI Receptionist has a published starting figure. Its page says "Get started from £49 a month." That is the only price Moneypenny prints anywhere we could find on 28 October 2026, and the same page's pricing question answers "Our pricing is built around what you need, so the best next step is to talk to us", adding that the AI is "often up to 65% less than traditional people-first answering".
The human Telephone Answering Service has no published price at all. Its own pricing answer reads "Our pricing is flexible and based on your needs", and the page is built around a "Get your quote" form rather than a price list.
Two things worth knowing before you compare that £49 with anything. The standard answering hours are 8.30am to 6.00pm: outside them, the page says calls "divert to our voicemail system" unless you arrange evening, weekend or 24/7 cover separately. And a starting figure answers a different question from a quote, so what you will actually pay for either service is whatever comes back from the form.
Where to read Moneypenny reviews
At the source, not here. Moneypenny prints a 4.8 score in its own site footer and links out to its Trustpilot profile, which is the page to read: scores move, and a competitor summarising them for you is worth nothing.
That is also the test to apply to this page. Every roundup that ranks for "best AI receptionist UK" or "Moneypenny alternative" today is published by one of the vendors in it, and in almost all of them the publisher happens to come first. We are a vendor too. So the facts above are quoted from Moneypenny's own pages with the links next to them, and the section below says plainly when it is the better buy.
When Moneypenny is the better choice
Often, and these are the cases where we would tell you so on the call:
- You want people, not software. If the thing you are buying is a human voice on every call, an answering service is what that is, and Moneypenny is the UK default for it.
- Your calls need judgement or care. Distressed callers, complaints, delicate conversations. Its own AI page says the AI hands over when it senses frustration or the caller asks for a person, which is an admission we would make too.
- You want a printed price before you speak to anyone. Its AI Receptionist page says "from £49 a month"; we give our price on the call. If a scripted phone answer is all you need and a published starting figure matters to you, that is the sensible buy.
- You are big, or multi-site. Switchboard volumes, franchise networks and whole outsourced customer-service teams are services it sells and we do not.
- You want a 25-year-old brand behind the phone. Founded in 2000, tens of thousands of clients, a Trustpilot profile you can read. That is real, and a new supplier cannot hand it to you.
None of that is us being generous. It is the honest half of a comparison, and it is the half every vendor-written roundup leaves out.
When having one built for you is the better choice
When the job is not "answer the phone politely" but "do the work that happens on the phone, our way". We are not an answering company with an AI product on the side; building the agent is the whole service.
- The rules are yours. What it says, what it never says, what counts as an emergency, who gets rung at 9pm. We write those into it with you, rather than picking from a product's settings.
- You hear it on your own calls before it takes the line. It runs on your real calls, checked by us, until it gets them right. Fully functioning and delivering value in 30 days guaranteed, or you pay nothing more until your agents are.
- You can judge it tonight. The number at the top of this page reaches a working AI receptionist answering for an invented dental practice. Ring it and ask it what a patient would ask. Nobody's roundup tells you that much.
- It does not have to stop at calls. An agent that answers the phone, one that books the work, one that chases a quote: it is the same fee, because ours is one flat monthly fee for unlimited agents, and the second agent costs nothing more than the first.
If you want the two models set out in detail, with how each one is priced, our article on an AI receptionist versus an answering service does that, and the dental version of the receptionist shows what "built around your business" ends up meaning in practice.
How we build it, and how long it takes
We build it around your business, and you hear it answering your own callers before it takes the line on its own.
- A 30-minute consultation. How calls reach you now, what callers usually want, which ones you miss, and what you want done with each kind. We tell you what we would build and give you the price.
- Scope. We watch how calls are handled today and agree what the receptionist will do: what it knows about your business, the questions it asks, and the rules for emergencies and handovers.
- Build. We build it inside the tools you already use, including your diary where we can connect to it.
- Test. It runs on your real calls, checked by us, until it gets them right. You ring it, your team rings it, you read the summaries, and we change whatever does not sound like you.
- Live. It does the job on its own, and we keep it working.
Whether it writes bookings into your own software depends on what that software lets another program do; where it cannot, it takes the booking down in full for your team. Your line only diverts to it once it is getting your calls right. Fully functioning and delivering value in 30 days guaranteed, or you pay nothing more until your agents are.
What we cost
Agent Place charges one flat monthly fee for unlimited agents, month to month: nothing extra per call, minute or message. We give you the price on the call.
So the two do not compare figure for figure. Moneypenny prints a starting price for one product, its AI Receptionist from £49 a month, and quotes the rest. Our fee covers the receptionist and every agent you add after it, built around your business and kept working by us, and you can stop any month. Fully functioning and delivering value in 30 days guaranteed, or you pay nothing more until your agents are. That is the trade, and it is the right one only if the agent has to fit your business rather than the other way round.
Frequently asked questions
- How much does Moneypenny cost?
Its AI Receptionist page says "Get started from £49 a month", and its pricing answer on the same page says the price is "built around what you need, so the best next step is to talk to us". The human Telephone Answering Service publishes no price and answers "Our pricing is flexible and based on your needs". Both pages were read on 28 October 2026 and are linked from the pricing section above.
- Does Moneypenny have an AI receptionist?
Yes, and it has its own page. It is a separate product from the human answering service, described on its own page as fully automated answering, and Moneypenny says it is built on the 200 million calls the company has handled. Its page also says it hands a call to a real receptionist when it does not know an answer, senses frustration, or the caller asks for a person.
- Where can I read Moneypenny reviews?
On its Trustpilot profile, which its own site links to; its footer prints a 4.8 score. Read them there rather than trusting any vendor's summary of them, including ours.
- What are the alternatives to Moneypenny?
Three kinds, and they are not really the same purchase. A human answering service, usually priced per call or per minute. An off-the-shelf AI receptionist you set up yourself from a form. Or someone who builds the agent around your business and keeps it working, which is what we do.
- How much do you cost?
We charge one flat monthly fee for unlimited agents, month to month, with nothing extra per call, minute or message. We give you the price on the call.
- Are you cheaper than Moneypenny?
We do not claim to be. Moneypenny's AI Receptionist starts from £49 a month; ours is one flat monthly fee for unlimited agents, so the receptionist and any agent you add after it sit under the same fee, with nothing extra per call, minute or message. We give you our price on the call, and if a scripted answer is all you need, we will tell you on that call that Moneypenny is the better buy.
- Can I hear yours before I book anything?
Yes, right now, from your own phone. The number at the top of this page reaches our AI receptionist, answering as Birchmoor Dental Practice, which is an invented practice; ask it about a toothache tonight, whether it takes NHS patients, or to book a hygienist, and judge it on what you hear.
- Can we keep our phone number?
Yes. Your number stays where it is, and you choose which calls are passed to the agent: every call, only the ones you miss, or only the ones that come in after you close.
Worth a 30-minute conversation
Tell us how calls reach you today and what you would like done with each one. We will tell you on the call whether an AI agent is right for you, what we would build, and the price, and if an answering service is the better buy we will say that instead.
Unlimited agents. One flat monthly fee. Fully functioning and delivering value in 30 days guaranteed, or you pay nothing more until your agents are.
